Junior Summer Camp Success
From Tuesday 30th July through til Thursday 1st August youngsters, aged between 8-13, sharpened up their skills for the coming season at a Club summer hockey camp. This was the first organised by the Club as part of the onging development of our Junior Section. The three day event was hosted by Jimmy Christmas, Louise Cassey and Mick Emery. They were helped by some volunteers from the Junior Section looking to develop their coaching skills. The focus of the camps was on having fun and even the rain that fell on the first day did not dampen the enthusiasm of the attendees. A high coach to participant ratio enabled lots of contact time for attendees who learnt a variety of skills and techniques. These were utilised throughout the camps in games and competitions. Attendees covered lots of new things that aren't often taught much, such as penalty flicks. They even got the chance to beat the Head of the Junior Section - Mick Emery - who took a turn in goal. Lunch breaks were held in the Clubhouse and featured a number of quizzes. The camp ended in a tournament, giving all attendees the chance to show off what they'd learnt. This was followed by a presentation of prizes and awards in the clubhouse. The coaches congratulated everyone for their oustanding commitment and effort at the camp and gave attendance certificates to all. 6 players were singled out for special mention – Issy Ramiro, Alicia Grasson, Louis Ramiro, Hebe Bowley, Chris Fahy and Elijah Clifton. They all received special medals. Jimmy Christmas, the Club’s Hockey Manager-Coaching, said:-
"This was another big step forward for MHC, who's commitment to developing the Junior Section has been clear over the last few years. The camp went very well and everyone from the attendees to the coaches had lots of fun. With experience now behind us and some valuable feedback from parents and attendees we aim to hold future camps, which will be bigger and better."
